After five decades of operation, Hong Kong's modernist General Post Office in Central is closing its doors. The structure replaced a celebrated Edwardian-style building, which was once described by a former museum curator as the city's most aesthetically pleasing site. That previous landmark, known for its rose-colored brickwork and granite pillars, was demolished fifty years ago, an act that many conservationists still view as a significant loss to the city's architectural heritage. As the current modernist facility reaches the end of its service life, it marks another chapter in the ongoing transformation of Hong Kong's urban landscape, reflecting the city's complex history of balancing development with the preservation of its historical identity.
