The local government of Manila has officially declared a leptospirosis epidemic following a rapid increase in reported infections that exceeded established health thresholds. According to the Manila Public Information Office, the city's attack rate climbed significantly from 1.27 percent to 3.48 percent within a single week. This surge has placed immense pressure on local medical facilities, with several major district hospitals, including Sta. Ana Hospital and the Ospital ng Maynila, reporting that they have reached full patient capacity. In response to the crisis, Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso has directed health authorities to launch an aggressive public awareness campaign to mitigate the spread of the disease and manage the rising number of patients seeking urgent medical care across the city.
