A severe flood originating in the glacierized Himalayan region on August 26 has caused widespread destruction across several Nepalese districts, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Gorkha. Triggered by a massive failure of ice and rock in the upper Lhende Khola catchment near Langtang-Lirung, the event unleashed a destructive flow of debris and water downstream. The disaster severely damaged critical infrastructure, such as hydropower plants, bridges, and the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung trade route, while causing significant loss of life and livelihoods. Satellite analysis reveals that approximately 2.10 square kilometres of glacial area were involved in the collapse. This incident underscores the increasing vulnerability of mountain communities to cascading hazards, where glacial instability leads to rapid, large-scale downstream impacts. Authorities are now assessing the long-term implications of these environmental shifts on regional safety and infrastructure resilience.
