The Sri Lankan government has initiated a 1.5 billion rupee project aimed at enhancing safety across hazardous road sections that fall outside the national highway network. Each district will receive an allocation of 60 million rupees to address these dangerous locations. Following a Cabinet proposal submitted by Minister Bimal Rathnayake in May 2026 and subsequent approval in June, formal agreements were signed with local government leaders yesterday. These memorandums of understanding empower municipal authorities and local councils to identify specific high-risk areas within their jurisdictions and execute necessary safety improvements. The National Council on Road Safety has been tasked with providing technical guidance and monitoring the overall progress of this nationwide infrastructure effort.
