During the 30th-anniversary lecture of the Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Singaporean Minister Chan Chun Sing highlighted that the nation cannot escape its geographical reality or global political dynamics. He stressed that a small state must cultivate a profound understanding of international affairs to maintain its relevance and connectivity in an ever-changing environment. Chan noted that staying ahead requires constant adaptation and deeper insight than what is typically expected of smaller countries. Reflecting on the origins of the institution, he recalled the foundational efforts of the late SR Nathan, who established the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies under the direction of then-Defence Minister Tony Tan. Chan praised Nathan’s exceptional instincts, which helped shape the strategic focus that continues to guide the school today.
