Numerous Chinese citizens who registered their facial likenesses on specialized platforms to generate income through AI-driven short dramas and advertisements report earning little to no money. Despite marketing claims promising lucrative returns, platforms like ActID and NCAIGC have failed to deliver consistent demand for non-celebrity portraits. Industry experts suggest that production companies primarily prioritize established influencers and celebrities, leaving regular users with few opportunities. While some participants joined these services to better protect their portrait rights against unauthorized usage, the actual market for everyday faces remains underdeveloped. Furthermore, authorities have raised concerns regarding the illicit scraping of personal data from social media, as criminals bypass these official licensing channels to clone voices and faces for commercial gain. Platform operators maintain that their services function as discovery tools rather than guaranteed employment contracts for users.
