Since 2021, Zhao Yushun and Yuan Zhenzhen have traveled across China to produce short documentaries about rural life. Their project, titled Yuzhenjishi, focuses on the experiences of elderly farmers, migrant workers, and the challenges facing agricultural communities. Having grown up as children left behind by parents working in cities, the couple previously struggled to find stability in urban centers. They eventually abandoned their media careers in major cities to document the lives of those often overlooked by mainstream narratives. Their work, which includes a series along the Yellow River, has gained significant popularity on the video platform Bilibili. By capturing candid conversations and personal stories, the filmmakers provide a platform for rural residents to share their struggles with economic shifts, environmental issues, and the departure of younger generations, fostering a deep sense of connection with their audience.
