The Senate Standing Committee on Interior in Pakistan has formally endorsed legislative changes that would impose the death penalty for individuals convicted of acid attacks. Led by Senator Faisal Saleem Rehman, the committee reviewed various private members' bills aimed at strengthening criminal laws. Beyond addressing acid-related violence, the approved measures include new regulations to penalize the mistreatment of domestic staff, prohibit illegal LPG decanting, and prevent hospitals from withholding deceased bodies. Despite objections raised by the State Minister for Interior, Tallal Chaudhry, the proposals received support from PPP lawmakers and were successfully passed. These amendments to the Pakistan Penal Code are intended to enhance public safety and provide stricter legal consequences for severe criminal offenses, reflecting a broader legislative effort to address gaps in current protections for citizens.
