The Sundarbans, recognized as the world's largest mangrove forest, currently faces severe ecological threats from climate change, industrial expansion near Mongla, and existing pollution from the Rampal power plant. Despite these vulnerabilities, authorities are evaluating Akram Point and Nolian village as potential locations for a new liquefied natural gas terminal to mitigate national energy shortages. Akram Point is situated at the junction of the Pashur and Shibsa rivers, placing it in close proximity to the Sundarbans South and East Wildlife Sanctuaries. These protected areas are designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The proximity of these proposed industrial sites to critical wildlife habitats has sparked apprehension regarding the potential for further environmental degradation in this sensitive region.
