At that time, Kumar was the resident commissioner for the Kerala government in New Delhi before moving to the Union Home Ministry. Kumar, who assumed his current role as an election commissioner in May 2024, has not yet issued a formal response to these accusations. The controversy emerges amidst ongoing scrutiny regarding Kumar's professional background and previous government service.
