Resident doctors at the National Medical College and Teaching Hospital in Birgunj are engaged in a prolonged dispute with the administration over mandatory service requirements and working conditions. The medical professionals allege that the college has unilaterally enforced compulsory hostel, mess, and internet usage, while also withholding stipends and retaining educational certificates. Despite previous mediation attempts involving local authorities and government ministries, tensions have escalated, leading to a defamation lawsuit filed by the college management against several doctors. The protesters, who have staged demonstrations in Kathmandu, also report excessive 36-hour duty shifts and the falsification of agreement documents. While the Institute of Medicine at Tribhuvan University has formally requested that the college restore a stable academic environment, the conflict remains unresolved as both parties struggle to reach a consensus on operational policies and labor rights.
