A former Council of State judge, Önder Tekin, has escalated his legal battle against the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) to the European Court of Human Rights. Following the dismissal of his claims by domestic courts, Tekin alleges that TurkStat has consistently underestimated inflation rates over the last several years. He contends that these inaccurate figures have negatively impacted the purchasing power of retirees and public sector workers, as their salary and pension adjustments are tied to official data. Tekin initiated his legal efforts in early 2022, asserting that the discrepancy between reported inflation and actual market price increases has resulted in insufficient compensation adjustments under the national collective bargaining framework. By taking the matter to the Strasbourg-based court, he seeks to challenge the methodology and outcomes of the state's economic reporting.
