Sri Lankan health authorities have scheduled a five-day intensive campaign to eliminate dengue breeding sites across 62 Medical Officer of Health divisions. Starting on September 14, the initiative aims to mitigate the impact of the disease ahead of the anticipated northeast monsoon season. Dr. Kapila Kannangara, Director of the National Dengue Eradication Programme, identified several high-risk provinces, including the Western, Northern, and Southern regions, as primary targets. Current statistics for 2026 indicate a significant public health challenge, with over 96,000 recorded infections and 73 fatalities. The Western Province remains the most affected area, contributing more than 50,000 cases to the national total, with particularly high concentrations in the Gampaha and Colombo districts. This coordinated effort seeks to lower the case fatality rate and prevent further outbreaks during the upcoming rainy period.
