Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake announced a new safety initiative in Parliament requiring passenger transport vehicles, including buses and school vans, to undergo road worthiness inspections every 5,000 kilometers or every three months. This proposed measure is distinct from existing annual checks and aims to verify essential mechanical functions at a cost between 1,500 and 2,000 rupees. While the mandate currently excludes private vehicles, the Minister encouraged voluntary participation for all drivers. This policy response follows a string of fatal road accidents, such as the Kotmale bus crash and the Monaragala tractor collision, which highlighted significant maintenance negligence. By implementing these frequent, targeted safety assessments, the government intends to reduce the incidence of mechanical failures on public roads and enhance overall passenger security across the country.
