The Irrigation Department of Sri Lanka has announced that national reservoir water levels have fallen to approximately 47.3 percent as a result of persistent dry weather. According to H. M. P. S. D. Herath, the department's director of water management, major reservoirs are currently holding only 34.4 percent of their total capacity. The situation is most critical in the Ampara, Batticaloa, and Trincomalee districts, where storage levels have dipped to an average of 20 percent. Despite these concerns, officials confirmed that current supplies remain adequate to support the ongoing Yala cultivation cycle and provide necessary drinking water until the next rainy season arrives. Due to increased evaporation caused by high temperatures, the department has advised the public and agricultural sectors to practice water conservation measures to ensure resources are managed efficiently.
