Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake recently addressed Parliament to clarify new seat belt regulations that took effect on September 19. The Minister stated that families are permitted to install an extra seat belt in the center of the rear seat to safely accommodate a fifth passenger. He emphasized that the government does not restrict the number of occupants in a vehicle, provided that every individual is secured with a seat belt. Owners of vehicles currently lacking these safety devices have been granted a one-year grace period to complete the necessary installations. The Minister highlighted the effectiveness of these safety measures by referencing a recent expressway accident involving a school bus, where the mandatory use of seat belts ensured that all students involved sustained only minor injuries.
