Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, the General Secretary of the United National Party (UNP), has announced that several candidates currently with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) are expected to rejoin the UNP once the general elections conclude. Speaking at a press conference, Kariyawasam stated that the party would selectively readmit individuals based on their potential contribution to the nation. He revealed that over 15 SJB members had previously initiated discussions about returning to the UNP. Addressing concerns regarding the party's reliance on new candidates, the General Secretary drew parallels to the 1977 general elections. He noted that the UNP achieved a significant majority during that period despite internal departures and the suspension of key figures. Kariyawasam emphasized that historical precedents show the party can succeed even when prominent members leave, provided the remaining team remains focused on national interests.
