The California Democrat emphasized that Washington should avoid forcing the Central Asian nation to align exclusively with specific global powers. By repealing the outdated Jackson-Vanik amendment, the U.S. could demonstrate a stronger commitment to the region while simultaneously securing new sources for critical minerals. Panetta, who serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, suggested that fostering deeper economic cooperation is essential as the U.S. looks to expand its strategic influence in Central Asia. This legislative shift is presented as a way to move beyond Cold War-era restrictions and provide Kazakhstan with more robust economic opportunities.
