The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) is initiating the domestic production of soft target dummies used for testing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Currently, India relies on imports from nations like Germany, Japan, and China, which officials argue do not accurately reflect Indian road conditions or physical characteristics. These specialized dummies are essential for evaluating safety features such as pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking. By creating localized versions, the agency aims to better simulate unique traffic scenarios, including the presence of animals and diverse vehicle types like three-wheelers. This move aligns with the upcoming implementation of more rigorous vehicle safety standards under the Bharat National Car Accreditation Program 2.0, scheduled for October 2027. The initiative seeks to enhance road safety technology in India, which currently faces high rates of traffic accidents and fatalities.
