A coroner’s inquiry in Singapore has determined that a fire in a Hougang public housing unit, which claimed the lives of three family members, was exacerbated by severe hoarding. State Coroner Adam Nakhoda concluded that an electrical malfunction ignited the blaze, but the extensive accumulation of items within the rental flat facilitated the rapid spread of the fire. Between 2017 and 2023, Housing Board officials made multiple attempts to intervene following reports from neighbors regarding hygiene issues and corridor obstructions. Despite these repeated offers for decluttering support and social service referrals, the family consistently rejected assistance, claiming they could handle the situation independently. The incident highlights the risks associated with hoarding in residential settings and the challenges authorities face when residents refuse help.
