The Iranian government has announced a significant hike in petrol prices for heavy users as the nation struggles to maintain subsidized fuel supplies under wartime conditions. This decision comes as Tehran faces a severe fuel deficit exacerbated by international sanctions and a naval blockade that restricts oil exports and necessary imports. These economic challenges are further intensified by recent US military actions targeting Iranian oil tankers, leading to a new policy of retaliatory measures. Observers express concern that the rising cost of living could place substantial strain on households, potentially triggering public demonstrations similar to the widespread unrest witnessed in 2019. The government's ability to manage domestic energy needs remains constrained as the country navigates the financial pressures of its current geopolitical conflict.
