Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, recently addressed the United Nations regarding the necessity of upholding international law. He asserted that national sovereignty and territorial integrity are non-negotiable and must be protected from political manipulation. Gharibabadi criticized the selective enforcement of legal principles, arguing that double standards and geopolitical interests undermine the global legal order. He specifically highlighted Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which forbids the use of force against other nations. Furthermore, the diplomat called for consistent adherence to humanitarian laws, emphasizing that civilian protection must be universal regardless of the region. He warned that inconsistent accountability and the prioritization of political agendas over established legal frameworks erode trust in multilateral institutions and threaten the foundational principles of global justice and peace.
