Sri Lanka's Irrigation Department has declared an amber flood warning for four regions within the Kala Oya Basin. This alert remains effective until 11:00 a.m. on October 23. The measure follows substantial precipitation in the upper and middle catchment zones, which has caused water levels to climb dangerously close to flood thresholds. To manage the influx, authorities have opened the spill gates of the Rajanganaya Reservoir, discharging water into the river at a rate surpassing 13,200 cubic feet per second. Officials cautioned that discharge volumes may rise further based on incoming water levels. Residents in low-lying areas situated along the river valley are advised to remain vigilant as the risk of inundation persists due to the ongoing water release.
