Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan recently addressed the escalating Russia-Ukraine conflict during a joint press conference in Baku. Fidan emphasized that the war's expansion into the Black Sea poses significant risks to regional security, commercial navigation, and the safety of Turkish citizens. He highlighted that recent attacks on civilian vessels have resulted in casualties, including Turkish and Azerbaijani sailors, which he described as unacceptable. Türkiye remains committed to diplomatic efforts, citing the importance of the Montreux Convention and past initiatives like the Black Sea Grain Initiative. Fidan noted that Ankara is actively engaging with both parties to establish a moratorium on targeting energy infrastructure and to seek a path toward a lasting peace agreement. Despite the shift toward a war of destruction, Türkiye continues to advocate for a negotiated settlement, stressing that ending the hostilities is essential to prevent further global economic instability and regional disaster.
