Indonesia is currently grappling with its most severe wildfire season in over a decade, fueled by extreme heat and drought conditions associated with the super El Niño weather phenomenon. Recent data from the European Union’s Copernicus climate monitoring service indicates that carbon dioxide emissions from fires in Sumatra and Borneo reached 19.7 million metric tonnes between September 1 and September 7. This figure represents more than one-third of total global fire emissions, surpassing Russia to rank as the highest in the world. The ongoing environmental crisis highlights the vulnerability of the nation's peatlands and forests as authorities struggle to contain the blazes amid persistent dry weather.
