The Macau Court of First Instance has finished the region's inaugural closed-door trial concerning national security allegations. The legal proceedings involved former pro-democracy lawmaker Au Kam San, who was taken into custody in July 2025 on accusations including subversion. This case marks the first instance of a trial conducted under updated security legislation that permits judges to exclude the public from such hearings. Following the conclusion of the proceedings this week, the court announced that a verdict will be announced at a future date. These legislative changes, which broadened the reach of national security laws, were implemented in May 2023, with subsequent amendments allowing for the restriction of public access to court sessions.
