Former CIMB Group chairman Tan Sri Nazir Razak and ex-Deputy Prime Minister Tun Musa Hitam have expressed concerns regarding the New Economic Policy (NEP). During a forum dedicated to the legacy of Tun Abdul Razak, both figures argued that the policy has inadvertently encouraged a culture of dependency among the Malay community. Nazir Razak noted that the initiative was originally designed as a temporary twenty-year measure, often referred to as a handicap, to assist the population. However, he warned that the prolonged implementation of these government-led assistance programs has led to a deeply ingrained reliance on state support. The discussion highlighted the need to evaluate whether the current framework should be replaced or significantly restructured to move away from this dependency model.
