Updated ICAO standards, effective March 2026, mandate that power banks must be carried in hand luggage, limited to two units per passenger. Devices must be individually protected against short circuits and comply with UN 38.3 testing criteria. While units under 100 Wh are generally permitted, those between 100 and 160 Wh require airline authorization until the end of 2026, after which 100 Wh becomes the universal limit. Passengers are advised to convert capacity from mAh to Wh using the standard voltage formula. Furthermore, specific regional regulations, such as China's CCC certification requirement for domestic flights, may apply. Aviation authorities strongly advise against using power banks to charge devices during flights to prevent overheating risks, with specific usage policies varying by airline carrier.
