Industry executives, including Thai AirAsia’s Tassapon Bijleveld, are voicing strong opposition to a proposed ฿1,000 departure tax, warning it could severely damage the tourism sector. Travel operators estimate potential losses of ฿150 billion, far exceeding the government's projected ฿45.9 billion in revenue. This proposal coincides with a sluggish recovery in international arrivals, which have reached only 23.94 million, with recent weekly figures showing a decline. Critics argue that adding this levy, alongside a potential ฿450 entry fee, would make Thailand less competitive compared to other destinations. Airlines are particularly concerned that reduced outbound demand will negatively impact the profitability of international routes, further hindering the industry's post-pandemic rebound. With public consultations ending on October 29, stakeholders are urging the Ministry of Finance to reconsider these additional financial burdens on travelers.
