Ng Lye Poh, widely recognized as the matriarch of the family behind the Sheng Siong supermarket chain, has died at the age of 91. Her passing occurred on the morning of September 5. Known affectionately as the "Sheng Siong Ah Ma," she gained public attention following a high-profile kidnapping incident in January 2014. During that event, perpetrator Lee Sze Yong abducted her while demanding a ransom of S$20 million, a scheme he had reportedly planned for two years to resolve his personal financial debts. Her son, Lim Hock Chee, noted that all bereavement contributions received during her wake will be directed toward charitable causes. Family members remember her as a friendly and approachable individual. The kidnapper was eventually apprehended and prosecuted for his actions, which he had orchestrated alongside an accomplice.
