US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the state of New Mexico to “New America,” a proposal promptly dismissed by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. This suggestion follows a series of geographic renaming efforts during Trump's second term, including the formal executive order to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” and the directive to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” While the Lake Ontario change has impacted federal mapping and created diplomatic friction with Canada, the proposal for New Mexico lacks legal standing, as state names cannot be altered via social media. Additionally, Trump previously floated the idea of renaming the Strait of Hormuz, though that suggestion appeared less formal. These initiatives reflect a broader political focus on national identity, though their implementation remains inconsistent across international and domestic jurisdictions.
