Cemil Bayık, a prominent leader within the Kurdistan Communities Union, has urged the Turkish government to provide transparency regarding the situation of imprisoned PKK founder Abdullah Öcalan. Speaking to the Fırat News Agency, Bayık cautioned that ongoing peace efforts might falter if the government prioritizes disarmament over necessary democratic reforms. These statements follow the recent passage of the Strengthening National Solidarity and Social Integration Law by the Turkish parliament. This new legislation aims to facilitate the reintegration of PKK members who have not engaged in severe criminal activities into civilian society by offering them immunity or reduced legal penalties upon surrendering their arms. Bayık emphasized that a comprehensive resolution requires addressing the leadership status of the group rather than focusing solely on ending the armed conflict.
