Mazlum Abdi, a former commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces and current adviser to the Syrian presidency, stated during a recent Turkish television interview that a dialogue with Abdullah Öcalan would be beneficial. While Abdi expressed openness to fostering improved relations with Turkey, he remained non-committal regarding potential travel plans to the country. He suggested that any renewed peace efforts between the Turkish government and the imprisoned PKK founder could positively influence the relationship between Ankara and Kurdish groups in Syria. Previously, in late 2025, Abdi indicated a willingness to engage in direct discussions with Öcalan if such a move contributed to a broader political resolution. The Syrian Democratic Forces, which previously received American support for operations against the Islamic State, recently announced the dissolution of their independent structure.
