The South Korean government is currently reviewing its potential military involvement in the Strait of Hormuz as hostilities between the United States and Iran escalate. While no definitive conclusion has been reached, the shifting security landscape and recent maritime attacks have prompted a reassessment of the risks involved for Korean personnel. Seoul is exploring various deployment options, though the use of a naval support vessel is reportedly losing favor. Instead, officials are considering the dispatch of patrol aircraft, mine-clearance units, or unmanned systems. This strategic recalibration comes as Washington continues to exert pressure on Seoul to provide resources for the international maritime security initiative. The primary concern remains the possibility of South Korean forces becoming entangled in direct combat operations within the volatile region.
