The Sri Lanka Police have issued a formal clarification regarding the legal protocols for repossessing leased vehicles and equipment. Authorities emphasized that police personnel are strictly prohibited from participating in the physical seizure of property. According to the Finance Leasing Act No. 56 of 2000, leasing companies must adhere to specific legal procedures to reclaim assets. Law enforcement officers have received official instructions confirming that their role is limited to maintaining public order. Police intervention is only permitted if a leasing firm provides advance notice and requests protection to prevent civil unrest. Furthermore, the guidelines stipulate that repossession can only proceed when the lessee does not offer resistance. This directive aims to ensure that finance companies operate within the boundaries of the law while preventing unauthorized police involvement in private asset recovery disputes.
