Local merchants in Omdurman report that business recovery is hindered by these soaring costs, which make it difficult for shopkeepers to maintain inventory levels. Returning residents are facing a harsh reality where their available funds are insufficient to cover basic household needs. According to local shopkeeper Omer Hamid, families arriving with budgets between 100,000 and 150,000 Sudanese pounds often discover that necessary goods now exceed 200,000 to 250,000 pounds. This substantial disparity between purchasing power and market prices is placing immense pressure on households attempting to re-establish their lives amidst the ongoing economic instability.
