A parliamentary committee focused on governance and civil protection has formally approved the Rabies Eradication and Dog Registration Bill, pending specific legislative amendments. Chaired by MP Najith Indika, the committee reviewed the proposal, which intends to eliminate rabies across Sri Lanka by implementing mandatory vaccination programs, managing dog populations, and overseeing commercial breeding operations. The new legal framework is designed to replace outdated ordinances by introducing a structured registration system and establishing national and regional advisory bodies. During the review process, lawmakers emphasized the necessity of defining the precise age for initial rabies vaccinations. Furthermore, the committee addressed the legal status and responsibilities of citizens who provide care and food to stray animals, ensuring these activities are appropriately integrated into the proposed regulatory structure.
