The Supreme Court of India has rejected a request for a six-month extension from a committee tasked with establishing a formal definition for the Aravalli mountain range. Chief Justice Surya Kant questioned the panel's timeline, suggesting the delay might be linked to his upcoming retirement. While the court denied the full six-month request, it granted a shorter extension, allowing the committee until November 30 to finalize its findings. The original deadline was set for August 31. This committee was established in May following public opposition in Rajasthan regarding a previous definition adopted by the court, which had limited the classification of the Aravallis to hills exceeding 100 meters in elevation. The court has since stayed that earlier decision to allow for a more comprehensive review.
