The recent electoral victory of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt has sparked significant concern among immigrant communities. Mamad Mohamad, a Syrian-born Yazidi Kurd and member of the Green party, achieved a personal milestone by becoming one of the first lawmakers with an immigrant background to join the state parliament. However, he characterized the achievement as a bittersweet moment due to the AfD's strong performance. The far-right party has consistently advocated for more restrictive asylum and immigration regulations, frequently labeling foreign influences as culturally alien. As the AfD gains political momentum, many migrants are now expressing apprehension regarding their long-term future and integration within the country, particularly as traditional conservative parties face declining support in the region.
