Turkey's Minister of National Education, Yusuf Tekin, has announced that the ministry is preparing to file a lawsuit against Meta. The legal challenge stems from concerns that content hosted on Facebook and Instagram negatively impacts the development and education of children. Tekin, speaking after a trip to the United Arab Emirates, noted that the ministry is drawing inspiration from similar regulatory and legal actions taken against the tech giant in the United States and the European Union. The minister emphasized that school-based cellphone restrictions are insufficient if students continue to encounter harmful material on social media platforms at home. He called upon social media corporations to implement more robust measures to protect minors. This move follows significant legal developments in the U.S., where Meta recently reached a multi-billion dollar settlement agreement regarding allegations that its platforms foster addictive behaviors in younger users.
