On October 21, coinciding with Uzbek Language Day, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev enacted legislation to update the national Latin-based alphabet. This reform replaces previous letter combinations with specific characters, resulting in an alphabet consisting of 28 letters and one apostrophe. Saida Mirziyoyeva, head of the Presidential Administration, stated that the move addresses long-standing linguistic shortcomings and aims to bolster the language's digital presence. To mitigate financial impact, the government will not require immediate replacement of existing documents or currency. Instead, educational materials and public signage will be updated gradually as they naturally expire. This decision follows years of public debate and legislative discussions, effectively finalizing a transition process that began in 1993. The reform is intended to improve literacy standards and honor the legacy of historical figures by solidifying the status of the Uzbek language.
