The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has issued a directive to organizers of Navratri garba celebrations in Maharashtra, urging them to prohibit Muslim participation. According to VHP spokesperson Shriraj Nair, the organization intends to enforce identity verification through mandatory Aadhaar card checks for all attendees. Furthermore, the group has proposed that participants receive a tilak, a traditional Hindu forehead marking, as a condition for entry. The VHP justifies these measures by asserting that the folk dance is a religious practice dedicated to the Hindu deity Durga, rather than a secular entertainment event. Navratri, the festival during which these dances occur, is scheduled to take place from October 11 to October 20. These guidelines represent a push by the organization to restrict access to the festivities based on religious identity.
