The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) achieved its strongest state-level performance to date in Saxony-Anhalt, capturing 43.8% of the vote. Despite this historic result, the party secured 39 seats, falling short of the 42 required for an absolute majority. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) suffered a significant decline, dropping to 17.2%. Mainstream parties have reaffirmed their refusal to form a coalition with the AfD, citing the party's extremist classification by domestic intelligence. Consequently, the state faces complex negotiations to form a government, as no clear majority coalition currently exists among the remaining parties. Voter turnout reached a record high of 77.8%, reflecting intense public interest. The AfD campaigned on platforms including stricter immigration controls and shifts in foreign policy, though other parties maintain a firewall against any formal cooperation with the group.
