The Daegu District Court has overturned a previous conviction against a 45-year-old man who described the May 18 Democratic Uprising as a riot in an online publication. Initially, a lower court had imposed a fine of 1 million won on the individual for breaching legislation that prohibits the distribution of misinformation regarding the 1980 pro-democracy movement. However, the appellate division ruled that the defendant's statement should be classified as a personal viewpoint rather than the intentional spread of false facts. Consequently, the court cleared the man of the charges, reversing the earlier legal decision that had found him guilty of violating the special law governing historical accounts of the uprising.
