The Australian government has introduced the Digital Duty of Care bill, a legislative proposal aimed at curbing online harm by granting users greater control over their social media experience. If passed, the law would allow individuals to opt out of platform-driven algorithms and customize their content feeds. Furthermore, the bill mandates that digital services, including apps and AI chatbots, protect minors under 18 from addictive design features and harmful content, such as bullying or material promoting hostility. This initiative places Australia at the forefront of global efforts to regulate Big Tech companies like Meta and TikTok. The move follows the country's previous decision to ban social media for children under 16 and aligns with increasing international scrutiny from the US and the European Union regarding the societal impact of digital platforms.
