Foreign ministers from the signatory nations of the Central Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (CANWFZ) Treaty have issued a joint declaration commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the agreement. Originally signed in Semipalatinsk, the treaty remains a cornerstone for regional security and global disarmament efforts. In their statement, the ministers reiterated their dedication to the pursuit of a world without nuclear armaments, highlighting the severe humanitarian risks associated with nuclear testing or deployment. The officials emphasized that such regional zones serve as essential instruments in curbing the spread of nuclear weapons and bolstering international non-proliferation frameworks. By marking this milestone, the participating states reaffirmed their collective responsibility to maintain a nuclear-free status in Central Asia, underscoring the enduring significance of the treaty in promoting global stability and preventing the catastrophic consequences linked to atomic weaponry.
