Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has introduced new legislation aimed at holding social media platforms accountable for the safety of users under the age of 18. Under the proposed regulations, companies like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook could face fines reaching US$78 million if they fail to uphold a duty of care. The draft laws seek to shield young people from exposure to harmful material, including pornography, cyberbullying, content promoting eating disorders, and depictions of criminal activity. Albanese stated that the government is responding to public demand to stop treating children as commodities. This legislative move follows increasing criticism regarding the use of addictive algorithms by major tech platforms, which have been accused of pushing extreme content to maintain user engagement.
