A large crowd gathered in Belgrade on Monday for the funeral of Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military commander who died while serving a life sentence for genocide and war crimes. Mourners assembled at St. Luka Church to pay respects to the man convicted for his role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre and the siege of Sarajevo. While supporters hailed him as a national hero, the event drew sharp condemnation from the European Union. EU officials and regional leaders criticized the glorification of a convicted war criminal, noting that such displays are inconsistent with European values. The funeral follows a week of commemorations in Serbia and the Republika Srpska, highlighting the persistent divide regarding Mladic’s legacy more than two decades after the Bosnian War concluded.
