Residents in Mahiyangana are raising alarms over the abandonment of construction supplies intended for a 12-kilometer electric fence. Materials including wire and concrete posts have been left at the Dehigolla Sri Purwarama temple for an extended period instead of being used to secure the area between Sorabora and Serana. Local religious leaders and villagers report that the delay by the Department of Wildlife Conservation has left the community vulnerable to frequent wild elephant incursions. Recent incidents include the destruction of a family home and significant damage to agricultural land by a herd of seven elephants. While the supplies deteriorate outdoors, the human-elephant conflict continues to intensify, resulting in property loss and threats to human lives. Villagers are calling for immediate action to complete the protective barrier as the safety situation in the region worsens.
