The legislative body based in eastern Libya has officially endorsed a contentious maritime boundary deal with Turkey, ending a long-standing period of resistance. This legislative shift signals a significant improvement in diplomatic relations between Ankara and the political faction associated with military commander Khalifa Haftar. During a recent session, lawmakers voted to overturn previous resolutions from 2020 that had formally rejected security and maritime cooperation with the Turkish government. Furthermore, the parliament unanimously decided to restore political ties with Ankara, reversing a prior mandate to sever such connections. This development highlights a notable change in the regional political landscape, as Turkey moves to strengthen its influence in the eastern Mediterranean by aligning with both the Tripoli-based administration and the eastern authorities that once opposed its strategic interests in the region.
